DIY HVAC Maintenance: 5 Simple Steps to Save Money and Boost Efficiency
1. Change Your Air Filters Regularly
This is the single most important thing you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work harder and wasting energy.
- How often: Every 1–3 months (more often if you have pets).
- Pro Tip: Look for the MERV rating. A higher rating catches more dust but can restrict airflow if your system isn’t designed for it. Consult your manual first.
2. Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit
Your condenser unit needs to “breathe” to release heat. If it’s buried in leaves, grass clippings, or overgrown bushes, it can’t do its job.
- The Fix: Maintain a two-foot clearance around the unit. Clear away any weeds or debris that have piled up against the fins.
3. Clean the Condensate Drain Line
When your AC runs, it creates moisture. That water drains out through a plastic pipe. Over time, algae and mold can clog it, leading to water damage or system shutdowns.
- The Fix: Find your drain line (usually near the indoor unit) and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar down it once a year to kill any buildup.
4. Inspect Your Registers and Vents
Are you blocking your vents with furniture or curtains? This creates pressure imbalances that stress your HVAC system.
- The Fix: Ensure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Vacuum them periodically to prevent dust from recirculating.
5. Check Your Thermostat Batteries
It sounds simple, but many “broken” HVAC systems are actually just dead thermostats.
- The Fix: Replace the batteries annually—ideally at the start of the cooling or heating season—to ensure your system communicates correctly with your home.
